Yoga and Breath Practices for Kapha Season: Ayurveda Workshop

  • 2nd Story Pilates+Yoga (Livestream) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Ayurveda, the science of life, is a 5,000 year old holistic system of natural healing that provides guidelines on how to live harmoniously by working with nature’s five basic elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether) to inform our lifestyle choices including food, daily and seasonal routines, and exercise. We will explore how to balance the elements present in the late winter and spring seasons, and practices to balance their effects so that we can have a more harmonious relationship with ourselves and our external environment.

Annamaria is offering this experience in 3 parts: Nourishing Foods for Kapha Season, Daily and Seasonal Practices for Kapha Season, Yoga and Breath Practices for Kapha Season. While it is highly encouraged to attend all sessions, it is not necessary to receive the benefits of this offering.

Single Session: $20

Part 3
Yoga and Breath Practices for Kapha Season

Yoga and Ayurveda are considered to be sister sciences as they are meant to be practiced together. Yoga is the study of spirit, a science intended to cleanse the heart so that we may awaken to the Truth of who we really are. Ayurveda is the study of matter, a science guiding us towards understanding the nature of this world and all of the energies at play. Practiced together, Yoga and Ayurveda teach us how to live harmoniously in this world that is made up of matter while staying connected to our soul.

Join us for our final session in this series in which we will engage in a kapha balancing yoga practice that includes a dynamic flow, invigorating breath techniques, and conscious relaxation that integrates all of the benefits of what we have learned on this journey.

Part 2
Daily and Seasonal Practices for Kapha Season

Ayurveda teaches that the individual is a microcosm of the macrocosm of the world around us. With Mother Nature moving in rhythms, Ayurveda guides us to practice awareness and cultivate routines that form a healthy lifestyle so that we can align and bring harmony into our lives.

Ayurveda acknowledges that there are main daily cycles (dinacharya) and seasonal cycles (ritucharya) that influence the quality of our lives.

In this session, we will:

  • Discuss daily routines to cleanse the senses including tongue scraping, using rose water, neti and nasya (nose rinse and oil lubrication), and abhyanga (self-oil massage);

  • Practice dry skin brushing and abhyanga (self-oil massage) techniques together (having sesame oil on hand is recommended for this session);

  • Learn about the times of day and ideal practices to introduce accordingly;

  • Discuss the importance of consistency and create a realistic, individualized daily routine.

Strong & Mobile: Yoga for Bone Density

Join Beverly for the first three Sundays in March from 2:30-4pm for a yoga series dedicated to improving balance, bone and joint health, and back care. Beverly will guide students toward the practices and postures that support older bodies, and will offer a variety of modifications to students with injuries and health concerns. Students will leave feeling stable, balanced, and confident. This series focuses on tools for healthy ageing, but everyone is welcome: senior practitioners; anyone with balance, joint, or back issues; and/or anyone interested in a therapeutic practice. Experienced practitioners and newcomers are welcome. Students can enroll in the entire series or register for classes individually

Beverly Goodman still remembers her first savasana—the deep relaxation at the end of a practice. That was in 1993. That magic led to a steady practice, deeper study, and she became a teacher in 2010. Since then, she has studied extensively with the goal of being able to bring yoga to every body. She has studied Experiential Anatomy, Pranayama, and Restorative Yoga with Judith Hanson Lasater, and has trained with Dr. Loren Fishman in his use of yoga to treat osteoporosis, back pain, and scoliosis. She is currently working with him in his clinics as part of her final practicum to become a certified yoga therapist.

Nourishing Foods for Kapha Season

In Ayurveda, food is used as medicine. Digestion is of paramount importance and it is said that the way in which we digest our food is a direct reflection of the way that we digest our life experiences. This workshop will introduce simple practices that are balancing in Kapha season. We will be making a tea and cooking a simple recipe together in this session!

In this session, we will explore:

  • The qualities of late winter and spring seasons, and their opposite attributes as a system of checks and balances;

  • Signs of imbalance and tips for keeping a strong agni (digestive fire);

  • Principles of ayurvedic eating and the overall role food plays in our life;

  • Making stewed apples and CCF (coriander, cumin, fennel) tea (recipes will be provided beforehand).
